Sustainable Mobility Advisory

The deep innovative practice and the goal towards sustainable development is now an actively expressed consultancy service , supported by an internal research group “Sustainable Mobility Advisory”, which has developed a range of skills and strategies specifically related to sustainability, climate change and features concerning smart-mobility and mobility turn. These methods are introduced within our services, highlighting the customer potential and risk of projects, and by making that directly comparable with the best international cases within a long-term vision. Typical services of planning, design and consulting are therefore now expanded to the range of issues on sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.

Systematica acts as a specialist mobility consultant for an integrated strategy on masterplan and design stages for international accredited sustainability methods and standars of certification systems and ratings (mobility related credits and indicators for the most significative rating systems: LEED, BREEAM, ITACA, etc.). Thanks to its experience in the field of mobility Systematica has voluntarily chosen not to create its own evaluation scheme but to integrate and compare, already disseminated methods and tools.

Also, just in order to converge to a common language of evaluation and comparison, Systematica voluntarily apply some basic methods in all its projects, which can then have an consistent comparison index in respect to international case studies. Standard sustainibility indexes and references (according to the major rating systems) for connectivity, transit accessibility and bicycle facilities are analyzed and reported.

The sustainable approach is not limited to the verification of sustainability indicators and features, but is built considering criteria of recent scientific research as resiliency, adaptation to climate change, smart mobility and mobility turn. The first two concepts have a significant effect in design and offer alternative solutions with a specific focus on long-term sustainability. In addition to well-known goals like reduction of private car modal share and conversion to no-carbon/zero-carbon / low- carbon mobility, transport infrastructure can be actors and / or beholders of the environmental changes. The acceleration in environmental and lifestyle (ie mobility and turn smartmobility) changes is a major challenge to be addressed immediately in order to design and implement mobility systems that are "actual" and optimized for the long term. Mobility systems need to guarantee a social and economic (and environmental) benefit for the community as well as for the developer.

Physical details in designing roads, sidewalks and parking lots not only influence the network of relations in a city, but also partecipate potentially to the generation of urban heat island (UHI) and rain water run-off effect. Heat waves and deep freeze impose to mobility systems operations more severe constraints. Risk assessment defines if exceptionals event can be tolerated or need to be prevented, and if an adaptation scheme is to be preferred. Risk assessment and adaptation schemes (soft – green -gray ) for masterplanning consultancy services (and mobility planning tools like PUM, PUT, Parking Plan, bicyclenetwork plan) as well as for design stages are analyzed and evaluated, basing on the most recent scientific research available.

The scientific method combined with the design quality is confirmed once again the added value of the specialistic consultancy of Systematica. Methods and tools implemented and applied are based on a deep analysis of technical and scientific research production.
