Located in a fast-paced developing area North of the city of Riyadh (KSA), the Al Wedyan development is a 8 sqkm mixed use development, promoted by the Al Akaria Development Company and designed by 5+design, Hollywood based planning and architecture firm, in collaboration with a group of highly qualified specialist consultants. The Master Plan aims at defining new standards for sustainable development in Riyadh: dense mixed-use neighbourhoods interlinked by and efficient public transport system and pedestrian network, allowing ground floor activation and the success of retail, cultural, entertainment activities such museums, cinemas and theatres.
Systematica was involved in master plan Detail Design phase after completing the overall transportation master plan during Concept Design phase in 2016. All transport and mobility strategies, goals and objectives were therefore further studied and defined more in detail during Phase 2. The study comprised dynamic traffic simulations (software: Paramics by SIAS) of the road network, mainly to adequately dimension the three access points from the high-way; detailed drop-off and taxi design for the city centre; a focus on shared parking benefits that brought to significant parking offer reduction and subsequent cost saving; public transport network optimization; guidelines for cycle lanes and junctions; detailed pedestrian modelling of the town centre (software: Cube by Citilab), during average business day and during peak events. A special focus has been paid to the definition of a strategy to accommodate Connected Automated Vehicles, future-proofing the development.
