Ex-Falck Area: the traffic system

The aim of this consultancy for the regeneration of the ex-Falck area was to identify the best solutions for accessibility minimizing the impact of the new functions on the existing fabric and trying, at the same time, to offer a contribution for resolving the traffic problems that characterise the whole area.

A direct survey was organised in order to build a simulation model for the whole area of Sesto San Giovanni based on up-to-date and detailed traffic data. This was done using manual counts of the vehicular flows.

The survey was organised in different phases. In addition to the above mentioned vehicular counts, interviews were carried out with drivers near some of the counting points and, interviews were carried out with passengers near the underground stations of Sesto Marelli and Sesto FS.

The study examined the current traffic conditions around the Transformation Area as well as the effects and the consequent interventions to guarantee the functionality of the road system. Dynamic microsimulation traffic models and estimates of future demands, carefully calibrated for future scenarios, were the fundamental tools of the study. The design scenario forecasts the realization of the masterplan for the ex Falck site.

The traffic model followed the following phases:
<1> Reference solution scenario as a starting point for the design scenario (future infrastructure scenario and traffic demand following the construction of the 4 interventions previously described)
<2> estimate of the masterplan trip generation
<3> identification of a new zoning system
<4> modifications to the infrastructure and introduction of a dedicated road network following the masterplan indications
<5> assignment of the new traffic demand on the configured road network
<6> solution of the potential problems found during the simulation phase and optimisation of the infrastructure
