<Title> Pedestrian simulation study for l’Artigiano craft fair at the Trade Fair Centre

Due to the restructuring of the inner Milan Trade Fair Centre because of the redevelopment of a large part of the Portello area, Ge.Fi, the company that runs the Trade Fair Centre, commissioned Systematica to conduct a pedestrian study to evaluate the impact of the largest event of the year, the craft fair l’Artigiano in Fiera (4 million visitors).

The study began with the collection and analysis of available data to create a pedestrian simulation of the entire Trade Fair area. By estimating the profile of the arriving visitor flows and the distribution of the average length of stay for each day of the week of the event, the day with the maximum attendance was established.

At the same time, through a series of incremental tests, the real capacity of the transport hubs (escalators, stairways, pedestrian crossroads) was determined and quantified by inference from the surrounding pedestrian flows.

The general simulations identified the possible problem points and facilitated the evaluation of the safest, most functional scenarios. Systematica supported the organisers in defining the management strategies for the event by indicating signage possiblities, and stategies for organising personnel and the visitor flows.
