Feasibility study for the redevelopment of the infrastructure for the metropolitan tram service.

Systematica developed a complex multimodal model on two scales: one was provincial to study the complete working of the system and the other was specifically related to the corridor for the true and proper feasibility study. The latter was also developed for a summer scenario and a winter scenario. The current market share of the rail services was equal to 8%. Traffic predication foresaw 1.7 million passengers per year for the redeveloped Alghero–Sassari line and 0.8 million for the new coastal line for the year 2010. The current volume of passengers was around 400,000 passengers a year. That meant that by 2010 the market share for rail could reach up to 22%. This forecast was based on the hypothesis for the main development of the territory along and around the railway lines.

To obtain these results the following measures were esssential:
<1>competition between road and rail should be stopped in the “corridor”
<2> a main structure (rail) and a feeding structure (road) should be guaranteed
<3> the quality of the service on offer should be radically altered (means of transport and station spaces)
<4> the frequency of the service should be at the level of “city use” typical for complex territorial use (at least 20 minutes for each direction during peak hours)
