Micro Mobility - Mobility Renaissance
26/02/2010

The functional shape of cities is changeable and dependent upon time of day and the mode of transport.
On the basis of this proved theory, it derives the idea of a city ideally called Khrónopolis, able to offer to everyone the chance to experience it entirily with movements within 45 minutes. A city which does not exclude the car but provides public transport systems and spaces for soft mobility so efficient to make the privately owned vehicles a secondary option.
The principles of Khrónopolis can be applied also to existing cities, as long as the new concept of moving,based on Macro and Micro Mobility is accepted, alongside the following four assumptions:

·  People aspire to “door to door” trips;

·  “Public” transportation, besides being “collective”, would be "individual” too;

·  The first and last mile need to be adequately covered;

·  Collective and individual public transport systems are to be efficiently integrated without competing.

Macro Mobility ensures mass rapid transit movements over medium and long distances and is provided by “strategic corridors” such as railway routes, metro lines, tram routes and BRT systems.
Micro Mobility fills the theoretical and actual gap related to the first and last mile. Eco-stations will be implemented at “strategic corridors” key stations, as places where travelers will find traditional bycicles and electric vehicles through sharing systems to reach the final destination.
The result is a individual public transport system which is efficient and environmental friendly as well as capable of offering high quality standards and, coupled by leading-edge urban planning policies, it will encourage proximity relations, resulting in a reduction of the overall urban mobility demand. Macro and Micro Mobility will create a real Renaissance of urban and regional Mobility.
