Car-free in the Center of Munich: Systematica’s Mobility Strategy for the Paketpost Quarter
Systematica’s mobility vision for the Paketpost Quarter in Munich is featured in an article by Stilla Graf on the project’s official website: https://paketpost-quartier.de/en/startseite/blog/car-free-in-the-center-of-munich.php
The Paketpost Quarter is one of Munich’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects, transforming the city’s historic postal distribution center into a vibrant, sustainable district. Systematica developed the integrated mobility concept that underpins the project, a strategy that redefines how people move, interact, and experience the city.
At the heart of the concept is a car-free approach: motorised traffic and parking are moved underground to make way for safe, green, and people-oriented public spaces above. The design prioritises active and shared mobility, supported by an extensive network of cycling infrastructure, micromobility options, e-mobility services, and intelligent parking management.
Inspired by the “five-minute city” principle, the strategy ensures that everyday destinations, from shops and schools to cafés and public transport, are within a short, safe walking or cycling distance. This model promotes healthier lifestyles, reduces emissions, and enhances the overall quality of life.
By combining data-driven planning, accessibility analysis, and mobility simulations, Systematica has created a holistic system that seamlessly connects people, services, and places. The result is a future-ready district that demonstrates how mobility can drive livability, not just movement, and forms part of a broader collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron on the Paketpost Areal by BÜSCHL Unternehmensgruppe.
