Cumulative 3D Visibility Analysis Porta Romana

How can we measure visibility to design better public spaces?
In the regeneration of Milan’s former Porta Romana railway yard, one of the city’s most ambitious urban transformations, Systematica, in collaboration with Iacopo Neri, is applying advanced spatial analysis to support the design process.
Using 3D isovist models and spatial visualisation, we’ve mapped areas of high and low visual exposure across the site. This helps identify key pedestrian routes, focal points, and isolated spaces, essential insights for enhancing walkability, perceived safety, and social activation.
Promoted by COIMA SGR, Covivio, and Fondazione Prada, the Porta Romana masterplan reconnects fragmented districts through a sustainable mix of housing, student accommodation, offices, and public services.
We see visibility not just as a visual metric, but as a key to shaping vibrant, inclusive, and active public spaces.
