Analyzing Bus Service Delivery in NYC for Equitable School Access

How can New York City better understand bus service delivery for children with special needs?

This question was at the heart of ROUTES (Redesigning Optimal Urban Transportation for Equitable School Access), a capstone project developed by students at NYU Center for Urban Science + Progress, part of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

For the third year in a row, we had the pleasure of mentoring the next generation of urban scientists. Together with Transform Transport, we supported the team every step of the way: from project definition to data analysis with NYC Open Data and historic service data.

This year’s partnership with NYC School Bus Umbrella Services, Inc was invaluable. They provided both insight into inclusive access to schools and real-world data to strengthen the research.

The study relied exclusively on open and publicly available datasets without personally identifiable information, ensuring privacy throughout the research.

We hope that initiatives like this can spark new ideas for improving the journey to school for every student.
