The City of Danville, VA, sits in a strategic position along the border of North Carolina. the city recently approved the redevelopment of an ex-industrial in the Schoolfield neighborhood, converting the site into a casino resort complex. with the expected increase in traffic to the casino, it was necessary to mitigate the impacts of the project on the surrounding community and provide the district with new infrastructure that would help support pedestrian friendly and sustainable modes of transportation.

Systematica was invited by Sherwood Design Engineers to take part in the creation of a mobility master plan for the city of Danville’s Schoolfield district. A comprehensive analysis was carried out to understand the current situation and demographic trends in the Schoolfield district as well as the city as a whole, breaking down the Main Street corridor into 6 sections based on the various urban and mobility characteristics of each. Working alongside the project partners to also determine the needs of the surrounding community, the scope of the strategy was to develop cycle corridors to create consistent cycle network along Main Street corridor, enhance cycle connectivity between the Main Street and the Riverwalk trail, densify transport services around main service density zones, increase network potentialities to develop local centers, and finally to implement strategic road diets to enhance overall road safety.
