Designing the region’s future transport infrastructure framework through a data-driven vision
Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, is a rapidly evolving industrial and port-driven urban center, with the city of RAK serving as its capital and primary economic hub. As the sixth most populous city in the country, it is undergoing significant transformation driven by long-term development ambitions and economic diversification strategies.
The primary challenge in developing a mobility and regional transport framework was the management of a large-scale urban system with a rapidly growing population and increasing demand for multimodal connectivity.
As part of a multidisciplinary consortium with Gensler, Place Design Group (PDG), and MT Planners, Systematica contributed to the development of a 50-year vision and framework plan for the northern region of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
Systematica’s role focused on defining the mobility backbone of the territory, ensuring that transport infrastructure would support both urban expansion and economic development objectives, while preserving operational efficiency and environmental quality. Complementary, the team developed comprehensive strategies for mass transit, freight and rail systems.
The planning process involved extensive collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders, aligning on a shared vision for the region’s future growth.
Through in-depth analysis and benchmarking, Systematica’s work focused on the development of:
- Foundational road and rail network infrastructure, supporting local and regional connectivity and urban growth
- A mass public transport structure, to anticipate the development of new transport facilities and centralities
- Logistics strategy, comprising a structure for regional, urban and last-mile freight and supporting economic growth
- Sub-regional planning directions, for the sustainable development of local transport, with an emphasis on improving public spaces for active modes of transport and on local public transport solutions to enhance accessibility
Systematica’s work provided a clear, data-driven vision of future transport infrastructure performance and potential, enabling stakeholders to understand how mobility systems will evolve in response to long-term regional growth.
The framework integrates key urban development drivers, including:
- Future land use patterns and spatial expansion scenarios
- New transport-related facilities
- Projected population growth and mobility demand trends
The framework establishes a strategic foundation for coordinated regional growth, providing guidelines for district-level master plans and establishing a clear roadmap for phased implementation.
Thus, it ensures that mobility infrastructure is not only planned for future demand, but actively supports the Emirate’s ambition for sustainable expansion, economic diversification, and long-term spatial transformation.
