Enhancing visitor experience at a UNESCO-listed castle in the Loire Valley while protecting its natural and cultural balance
Set within a 5,400-hectare estate, Château de Chambord is both vast and fragile. It is a UNESCO-listed masterpiece that must accomodate increasing visitor flows without compromising its identity.
Built between 1519 and 1547 at the request of King Francis I of France, the château remains a masterpiece of the French Renaissance attracting more than one million visitors each year.
Today, the estate hosts year-round tourism activities as well as major cultural events, including the renowned Festival de Chambord. As visitor demand continues to grow, the project’s main challenge lies in finding the right balance, welcoming more visitors while safeguarding what makes the place a true historic jewel.
Systematica is part of a multidisciplinary team contributing to the development of the Chambord masterplan, with a focus on mobility, accessibility, and visitor experience.
Our role is to understand how people move across the estate and reimagine access accordingly, making arrival, circulation and exploration more fluid, intuitive, and sustainable. From micro-mobility to public transport and site access, every solution is designed to reduce environmental impact while preserving the quality of the visit, in peak summer as well as year-round.
By combining sustainable mobility strategies with heritage preservation objectives and an inclusive approach, the project aims at supporting the long-term resilience of one of Europe’s most extraordinary cultural landmarks, ensuring that everyone can experience Chambord, while protecting its natural and cultural balance.
