URBAN FUTURESCAPE Panel Discussion & Book Presentation
On November 18, Systematica US hosted a panel discussion, moderated by Xenia Adjoubei, at the AIA New York | Center for Architecture to celebrate our new book, Futur35capes: A 35-Year Review, created to mark Systematica’s 35th anniversary.
Here are some highlights of what was shared:
– Sreoshy Banerjea, Executive Director, NYC Public Design Commission; Co-founder, Design Corps talked about the challenges in incorporating New Yorkers’ perspectives in solutions for the public realm and how this can be aided by developing design toolkits which take into account multiple government agency priorities.
– Matthijs Bouw, Founder & President, One Architecture & Urbanism, emphasized the importance of crossover and combination between climate adaptation and transportation infrastructure, especially in contexts where major highways were historically planned alongside waterfronts. He noted that great co-benefits can be unlocked if renewal and adaptation projects are designed in an integrated way with mobility planning.
– Daniel Sundlin, Partner, BIG / Bjarke Ingels Group, shared insights on how BIG’s urban renewal projects balance ownership, stewardship, and partnership between communities and owners. He highlighted best practices in activating the public realm while maintaining character and sense of place.
– Federico Messa, from our NYC office team, discussed the importance of correctly defining the equity framework around transportation projects, with the objective of shaping data collection, metrics, and simulation models with an inclusive perspective. He emphasized that every intervention should be measured and evaluated for its impact, and that the right metrics will enable truly transformative processes.
Systematica is thrilled with the positive reception of our latest book, Futur35capes. Stay tuned for the release of the digital version and updates on our upcoming event and book presentation. We look forward to sharing more with you soon!
