Gran Barranquilla Urban Expansion

The Urban Expansion Project in Barranquilla, Colombia, consists of a comprehensive vision for the time horizon 2100 in which a population growth of 1.5 million people in the greater Barranquilla area is expected, covering over 25,000 hectares surrounding the metropolitan area.

Systematica collaborated with the architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) on the development of the overall Transport Strategy and vision and advisory on mobility-related aspects to elaborate guidelines for the expansion of the greater Barranquilla area.

Systematica has developed a set of guiding principles covering all modes of transport and identified and tackled the main challenges to provide a holistic mobility master plan. El Hilo de Barranquilla, the proposed public transportation and soft mobility backbone, represents an emblematic feature of the entire project area, integrating all the best practices implemented within the master plan.

Density analysis around the existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stops highlighted the missed opportunity for creating Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) in the city center and helped setting density targets according to TOD best practices for the new urban centers.
The TOD strategies around the stops of El Hilo de Barranquilla, the proposed public transport and soft mobility backbone, facilitate the stitching of the existing centralities with new developments.
