Reimagining mobility at Politecnico di Milano for the new Bovisa – Goccia Campus
The Bovisa-Goccia regeneration project is transforming a former industrial area in Milan into a new international hub for education, research, innovation, and public life. The project covers approximately 325,000 sqm and includes a new university campus, innovation facilities, student housing, civic spaces, and a 24-hectare urban forest open to the city.
The new district will deliver around 105,000 sqm of new buildings across 20 low-rise structures designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape, and to preserve the site’s industrial heritage and environmental identity.
“The expansion of the Politecnico di Milano campus marks not only the emergence of an innovation hub that aims to compete on the global stage, but also the creation of a new green urban space open to the public”, said Donatella Sciuto, head of Politecnico di Milano.
The intervention combines urban regeneration, sustainable mobility, landscape restoration, and infrastructure resilience to create a vibrant mixed-use district that will serve students, researchers, businesses, start-ups, and the wider community.
Working under the direction of Renzo Piano Building Workshop and in collaboration with LAND, J+S, and a multidisciplinary consultant team, we are developing the mobility and infrastructure strategy for the new campus.
Our work focuses on creating a highly accessible, climate-resilient, and people-oriented area by:
- Prioritizing pedestrian and cycling mobility, ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding urban context
- Organizing the campus circulation network in coordination with the landscape and architectural masterplan
- Improving public realm quality and liveability
- Supporting future transport infrastructure and multimodal mobility
The masterplan is structured around three main implementation phases:
- Reconfiguration of Via Giampietrino and Via Fusinato to accommodate the new circulation strategy defined by the masterplan
- Completion of the new Corniche boulevard, establishing the primary north-south connection within the development
- Introduction of the new tram connection between Villapizzone and Certosa
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the project will contribute to the long-term regeneration of the Bovisa-Goccia neighbourhood, creating a new sustainable innovation district for Milan.
