Developed over four years starting in 2019, the Lecco Waterfront refurbishment took shape during a period of unprecedented global change, which gave a decisive impulse toward more sustainable urban planning practices.
The refurbishment is rooted in a conceptual framework that anticipated the growing need for harmony between the natural and built environment in urban spaces.
Mobility plays a key role in redefining the relationship between the built and natural environments, shaping the vision for the Lecco waterfront.
The construction works for the first lot of the project started in May 2024.

Systematica developed the mobility strategies with the aim of ensuring multimodal accessibility to the lakefront. In addition to that, detailed studies were conducted to define a set of measures, such as the detailed design of road signs and support for road layout, to reduce the impact of vehicular traffic along the waterfront and enhance the offering of alternative modes of transport, such as soft mobility and public transport, in line with the strategic vision of the General Urban Traffic Plan adopted by the Municipality.
The approximately four-kilometer-long refurbished promenade along the lake comprises cycling and pedestrian paths, which are part of a 290 km-long regional cycling itinerary connecting Cremona to Sondrio (PCIR 03-Adda). Moreover, during the design process, the design team adopted the most up-to-date national and international guidelines on pedestrian and cycle networks and road signs to ensure a smooth and flexible integration of the cycle and pedestrian paths within the built environment.
