Providing an integrated waterfront mobility system to support NEOM’s long-term vision for sustainable urban development in the Gulf of Aqaba
Magna Marina Complex is the central mobility and waterfront hub within NEOM’s coastal development strategy along the Gulf of Aqaba. Conceived as the region’s primary marina and public gateway, the development plays a strategic role in connecting a wider network of destination districts while establishing a new benchmark for integrated waterfront urbanism.
Defined by its strong relationship with the surrounding landscape and geological context, Magna has been designed to carefully balance natural and built environments through a sequence of sheltered public spaces, multimodal corridors, and environmentally responsive urban systems. The result is a settlement system that interprets the evolution of the territory, aligning it with future projections of urban development.
The project required the development of a comprehensive mobility framework capable of supporting large-scale waterfront growth while preserving the environmental and spatial quality of the Gulf of Aqaba coastline.
Systematica supported the multidisciplinary team led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill by delivering specialised mobility and transportation consultancy services in accordance with NEOM planning procedures and standards.
Our work focused on defining the strategic mobility framework for Magna and supporting the integration of transport infrastructure within the wider masterplan vision.
During the initial phase, Systematica developed the core mobility and transport framework for the development, including:
- Definition of applicable transport and planning codes and regulations
- Road network hierarchy and transport systems optimization
- Mobility strategy development
- Traffic impact and parking demand assessments
- Integration criteria for innovative and autonomous mobility systems
In parallel, Systematica prepared the Mobility Master Plan and preliminary multimodal circulation schemes to support seamless connectivity between public transport, private vehicles, active mobility, and logistics operations.
Systematica’s analyses established an in-depth mobility framework to support the development of Magna Marina and the wider Northern Gateway area in the Gulf of Aqaba.
By contributing to the mobility strategy, multimodal transport infrastructure design, and road network hierarchy, our work supported the creation of an integrated waterfront mobility system aligned with NEOM’s long-term plan for sustainable urban development and Saudi Vision 2030.
