Multi-modal Accessibility Plan for “The Floating Piers” by Christo

From June 18 to July 3, floating walkways lined with bright yellow fabric will create a walkway around Lago d’ Iseo, in Lombardia, joining the mainland to the islands Montisola and Isola di San Paolo. Visitors will be able to walk on the work 24/7, atop some 200,000 fabric-lined floatable polyethylene cubes stretching for almost two miles. The floating walkways are “The Floating Piers”, the project presented by Christo and Germano Celant at MAXXI in Rome in April 2015.

Systematica is involved in “The Floating Piers” firstly in coordination with Arup, for the feasibility study of the Project and its technical organisation, and then as independent firm, for the development of the Multi-modal Accessibility Plan.

The mobility strategic plan devised by Systematica is aimed at efficiently managing the flows of visitors to the Piers, expected to be between 28,000 and 42,000 for a single day, resulting in more than 500,000 visitors for the 2 weeks and 2 weekends event. Systematica sets up the mobility plan at both territorial and more local scales, to include all available multi-modal transport systems, among which lake water services (for a capacity of around 10,000 pax/day), bus shuttle services, and, more importantly, improved railway services, which will provide direct connections to the mainland point of access Sulzano for more than 15,000 people/day.

Among the analytical activities, Systematica supports the ad-hoc local managing public body Cabina di Regia on the definition of the Parking Plan and the assessment of effectiveness of pedestrian circulation on the Floating Piers as well as with respect to the different points of access across Montisola and Sulzano.

The participation of Systematica in such important and unique work of art marks the first real interaction between the technical know-how of the firm and world of Contemporary Art.
